Monster, She Wrote Exhibition
Reclaiming erased voices through myth, memory, and postcolonial history

Monster, She Wrote draws on historical sources to reconstruct the story of Len Karamoy, a writer and intellectual, while highlighting the role of women in the Permesta rebellion, according to the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MOCA).
The rebellion took place in eastern Indonesia in the late 1950s and was led by regional military figures seeking greater autonomy from Jakarta and a more even distribution of resources.
As the conflict escalated, it became linked to Cold War dynamics, with foreign involvement shaping its course.
Set in the early 1960s, the work places personal experience within this wider political context.
At its center is a fictional female frontline fighter preparing to carry out an ancestral ritual.
By combining historical material with fiction, the work explores how memory, gender, and political violence are recorded and understood.
