The long-awaited Eastern Extension of the Taipei Metro Red Line has completed its preliminary municipal inspection, keeping the project on schedule for a late June opening, according to officials.  

Following an evaluation on Sunday May 17, the Taipei City Public Transportation Office announced that the newly constructed section met all fundamental operational standards, with only four minor issues to be resolved.

The short 1.4-kilometer underground expansion from Xiangshan MRT Station to the new Guangci/Fengtian Temple terminal has been nearly a decade in the making, according to the Department of Rapid Transit Systems. First breaking ground in November 2016, the engineering project has been described as one of the most challenging builds in Taipei Metro history due to the area's complex geological features.

The core Tamsui-Xinyi Line stretches around 30 kilometers to link New Taipei’s coastal Tamsui District to Taipei's major business area. The extension, once completed, is expected to carry an additional 20,000 passengers daily, officials said.
